Movie Review : Extraction

Extraction
This is a white knuckled blood soaked pulse pounding thrill that dose not give you a moment to breath. Sam Hargrave brings a fantastic story to the surface with great Elements of heart and raw emotion that is brought to the screen greatly by Chris Hemsworth who lights up the screen in what I think is his best performance since Rush. The film is a high wired adrenaline filled film that isn’t afraid to go deeper and show some really touching moments of emotion that will tug at your heart strings.

First off, The way this film is executed is outstanding as the film tackles a ton of topics from self distraction, child soldiers, the meaning of trust loyalty and family.  As well as redemption and it doesn’t hold anything back when discussing these heavy topics.  The film has this Brutal look on how violence is depicted through the story it isn’t sugar coated it can be over the top in some instances but for the most part it’s very grounded and gritty in the way the action is presented onscreen. I’ll say it the violence is very graphic but it fits the tone and the story it’s telling very accurately in the way it’s shown the violence is justified and never just for show but has reasoning for it. Now for the way the film tackles the message of self destruction is very real as the main character we follow has in ways of putting a death wish and has really nothing to loose so he dose not mind of putting his life on the line. He does it to be a hero but also because he knows he has nothing left and that’s very heavy ontop of the other really hard topics it tackles to it never felt glamorized or over the top in its presentation of the topics it felt very authentic and real. That’s one of the biggest things I respect about the film just like the violence and the tone this film strives for it feels authentic and realistic in its depiction of the story at hand and it has this even balance of all the messages being spoken about. Like for instance when we see this mercenary who is told to bring this kid back home and make sure they stay alive it gets to a point where everything has gone sideways and people tell him to leave the kid and save himself and he knows in his heart that’s not the right thing to do and even though he could loose his life in the process he keeps his word to get this kid back home and it really hits you hard emotionally of the commitment this guy has to bringing this kid home safely. The tone this film strives for is incredibly raw and real and it pulled me in the moment it started until it ended such brilliant use of tones and great execution of them as well.

The performances are incredible! Chris Hemsworth brings one of his best onscreen performances ever giving delivering a performance of deep layered emotion that I’ve seen very rarely from him. He’s able to deliver such hard hitting emotional moments by saying so little and it’s genius to be able to witness unfold onscreen as well Chris Hemsworth is an absolute triumph. Then the entire supporting cast is outstanding also Randeep Hooda gives a fantastic supporting performance in the film bringing a great amount of intrigue and also great uncertainty to his performance I mean that in the sense you never knew what his intentions are but your so drawn into his character as he brings this scary intimidation to the surface but we also can understand to an extent why he’s doing what he’s doing and he brings a great amount of raw compelling emotion to his performance that you can’t look away from. Rudhraksh Jaiswal delivers a fantastic breakout performance. When I heard this was this his first big onscreen role I was impressed hugely as he was so great in every frame of this film delivering his dialogue in such a genuine and authentic way that you felt but you like a brick. You could see the sheer scared look in his eyes of raw emotion as is desperate to get home he brought such a raw emotional vulnerability to him that made you feel for this kid and Rudhraksh brought an incredible performance to the screen and I can’t wait to see what he does next. Then you have even David Harbour pop up in this film it’s a small role but damn when he’s onscreen you can see him bringing such charismatic energy to this very small role but he made it feel so big. He brought this uncertainty also of how are we supposed to feel about this guy what’s his motive and we see Over the course of this single scene what it is and it unfolds beautifully in the way that Harbour is able to flow through such different streams of emotions all at once and make them as compelling to watch and Harbour May not be in the film much but when he is onscreen he lights up the frame with his fantastic performance he brings. Overall everyone in this film did a fantastic job at showcasing fantastic emotion and bringing their characters to great life everyone was outstanding but it’s Chris’s performance that will make your eyes glued to the screen.

Lastly, Extraction is a film that dose not hold back it shows the brutal honesty of what goes on when going about these kind of missions. At the same time the film showcases great emotion that will hit you like a punch in the chest while also showing some of the best choreographed action sequences I’ve seen all year. It has great amounts of kick ass action as well as fantastic performances from the entire cast and a truly magnificent performance from Chris Hemsworth. Extraction is a brutal film that isn’t afraid to delve deep under the surface and show the dark brutal side but as well as showing great raw emotion as well Extraction is a compelling film that had my eyes locked on the screen until it ended I recommend people go see this film.

This film centres around a missionary who is sent to retrieve a kid who’s been kidnapped and bring him home but when things go south he stays true to his word to bring this kid home even if it might cost him his life.

Rated R : for strong bloody violence throughout, language and brief drug use

Chris Hemsworth : Hemsworth delivers one of his finest performances of his career! I’ve said for many many years that Chris has always excelled in the genre of dramatic roles. As I think his best performance of his career so far is his work in the Ron Howard film Rush which should of got way more attention then it did. Here he delves deep into the headspace of a mercenary and he brings a ton of complexity to the portrayal of his character in the film. In the film it’s revealed to us that this guy is great at what he does but he definitely has a lot of emotional demons he wrestles with due to some tragic things that had happened in his personal life and so because of that he has a death wise and really has nothing to loose. Hemsworth plays that role perfectly as the character for a lot of the film is very subtle in the way that he doesn’t talk about himself he gets in does the job that’s been called for him to do and that’s it but over the course of the film we see lots of layers of him stripped away. Their is a scene in the film where he eventually talks about why he’s so emotionally shut down and it’s one of the most heartbreaking and emotionally raw scenes I’ve seen Chris show onscreen. As when he starts telling the reasons why you can see his eyes swell up in tears and fights to keep for bursting into tears and it’s powerful to watch onscreen. What’s great about his character is he is constantly labeled or looked at as a hero by a lot of people and he constantly throughout the film denies that label as he dose not want to be called that as he sees himself as just someone who is trying to fill this empty void in his life by saving others in a way to feel better for the things he feels he messed up with in his past. It’s very deep and Chris shows that character in a very real way it never feels cheesy or over the top the way he is able to convey his emotional honesty in sometimes a fit of psychical rage on the enemies he has to take down or he can also be very heartfelt and wear his heart on his sleeve as he may seem tough on the outside surface which he is but on the inside he’s a broken man that wears this mask to help hide what’s really going on in his head. Chris brings a demanding presence to the film with great raw vulnerability and it’s heard through his voice bu the way his eyes can show such raw real heartbreak anger and sadness without saying a word is breathtaking. Chris chews up the screen In what is definitely one of his best ever onscreen performances as he delivers his lines in impactful truth and also can snap in a moments notice. I would love to see Chris tackle more complex characters like this as it really shows his strength as an actor that can show so many layers within a single character and he once again knocks it out of the park with his tremendous work in this film.

Sam Hargrave : Sam has crafted a terrific thrilling pumping action filled film! I’m amazed this is his first time he’s directed anything as when he as watching this I was constantly blown away by his ability to keep the story so engaging. Why I say that Is because plot lines like this has been done constantly so the question you have to ask is what way can I present a style people are familiar with but from another angle and that’s what he brings beautifully. A lot of people will probably think this is a rinse and repeat of a lot of other kidnapping plot line driven films that have come before it and sure their are similarities from other films. I will say though this film didn’t feel like it was just a rehash because of the way the story was centred around this kid and the relationship with this mercenary but also their is so many other big key players involved in what’s going on that the energy it’s giving off is absolute chaotic. Sam is able to bring the high stake action to the full front and deliver on that with some of the best and most brutal action sequences I’ve seen all year. He also then is aware not to let it go to overblown with the action as then it won’t seem grounded and will feel more like a over the top action flick which this film isn’t he constantly keeps the story, characters, action and tone grounded in reality so everything feels very authentic in its depiction which to me made it more engaging to watch was not being so over the top but keeping it grounded. Then he can show the more smaller and intimate moments with the characters giving them great time to evolve and really show their layers and depth so us as the audience can invest in them emotionally and really care for the characters which he dose greatly and the even balance is perfectly done as if never feels over done or to little it’s the perfect amount. As well he brings great performances out of his actors and directed this film greatly it’s rare for me to praise an action film so highly but this is definitely one of the best directed action films I’ve seen this year for sure overall Sam crafted and brought this film to life perfectly to the screen.
