Movie Poster : Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic The Hedgehog
This is such a fun time to be had! When I saw the first trailer and saw the visuals of how sonic looked I was so concerned and then when the films crew heard the backlash against the visuals of sonic. Then they spent more time to make him visually better and they did and I’m so glad they did as the cartoonish look he has in this film is so perfect for the character and the universe he’s set in and the film has a great story full of heart, humour and fun action that the whole family can enjoy.
Firstly, I grew up playing sonic video games and so this character definitely has a special place in my heart. The film takes the character we all love from the many video games we’ve seen and played him in and here it explodes in such fun as it immerses you within seconds into that world and fills each frame to the edge of Easter eggs and video game references only fans of the games will get which I love. As it wasn’t like it was so noticeable but it was able to be subtle and really give deliver on the front for the fans. As we know their hasn’t been a great track record with Video game adaptations into films and here it’s definitely one of the best adaptations of a video game to the big screen as it services the fans in such a fantastic way but is also able to keep it mainstream enough too for the people who didn’t grow up with the character can be introduced to this incredible world. It never tried to bite more then it could chew in the sense it never became overblown it was a great self contained story about friendship and finding his way home which is a quiet emotionally impactful message that was effective. As well as having great fun with hilarious humour balancing out both tones greatly.
Secondly, The films cast is great and I think you all know who I’m going to say was the standout yes it is Jim Carrey who gives a charismatic energetic performance that was like 90’s Carrey energy he was hilariously cartoonish which is what we love about him and he steals every scene he’s in and brings the dialogue to life with great sheer commitment to the character. Whenever he comes onscreen you would get excited and when he wasn’t onscreen you wanted more Jim fit perfectly into this film showing once again his incredible strengths as a comedic actor. The entire rest of the cast all contributed greatly too James Marsden gives a entertaining and witty performance that is fun and Ben Schwartz who plays Sonic gives a fantastic voice performance that really brought the title character to great life through his energetic and charismatic delivery that springs him off the page and warms your heart with his fantastic portrayal of the character we all have come to love. Everyone really gave solid performances throughout the film.
Lastly, Sonic The Hedgehog is a film that could of gone so wrong but it worked and gave us one of the best video game film adaptations to date. Giving us a story of great heart, humour and action that all was well balanced out and compelling added with terrific performances from the cast and a show stopping performance by Jim Carrey doing what he does best. The film also services the fans giving them what they want while also introducing this character to a whole new generation Sonic is a fun time to be had I recommend everyone go check out.
The film centred around Sonic the Hedgehog and when he looses his rings to the portal that he needs to use to get home before the government comes after him and on the way Develops a friendship that shows him he isn’t alone
Rated PG : for action, some violence, rude humour and brief mild language
Jim Carrey : Jim delivers a fantastic return to his cartoonish over the top energy! Jim hasn’t really been doing that much these days his last big studio film he did was a small role in Kick - Ass 2 and ever since has done small role in little indie films. He has done films like the Bad Batch and Dark Crimes which were both very small budget films that not a lot of people saw. Now to see him back in the spotlight doing a massively successful franchise brand like Sonic I was excited to see him tackle. He plays the famous antagonist of Sonic and breaths such life into him with his energy that perfectly fit the role and was a great vehicle for him to be able to go wild onscreen. He is very much in the same vein of Nicolas Cage where we enjoy to see him over the top and bombastic and loud and he brings all that fun here in such fantastic passion. The moment he comes onscreen the sheer presence he brought to each scene is great as he can play the scene in an intimating quietness and then the next minute be flying off the handle in a fit of hilarious rage. He is also so expressive in his eyes and when he speaks a line of dialogue that might be something so small or simple he breaths it to such life and gives it such intense passion and lights each scene he is in with such crackling beauty. I haven’t seen this kind of over the top Jim Carrey since The Grinch where he just throws himself into the character as deep as he can. He can be terrifying in a moment with this intensity in his eyes and then the next he can be cracking you up he has this fantastic way of switching between those key emotional switches that work so greatly while giving a fantastic entertaining performance as Sonic’s enemy Jim delivers one of his funniest and most enjoyable performances in years.
Jeff Fowler : Jeff delivers a greatly directed film that works on so may levels! Jeff had a great deal of stress due to the massive fanbase this character has and the amount of people that wanted this film to deliver and boy dose it ever. their has been a ton of video game adaptations to film with Super Mario Bros, Tomb Raider just to name a few of which were not good adaptions of its source that it was based on. Sonic is for sure one of the best vide game to film adaptations that was incredibly effective that worked and Jeff did a fantastic job at bringing this character to the big screen. He did not try to bring all the characters from every single game into the film or did he try to make this overcomplicated he kept it quiet simple and made it a story about finding what you call home. He didn’t choose to make the whole film an origin film he explains that backstory in about three minutes which I love. As I do love a great origin film but we don’t always need 2 hours to explain how they became who they are unless it is needed fine but it isn’t always needed and here they bring that explanation of Sonic in minutes then begins the adventure which made it flow so much better for this character. It throws us right into the middle of what adventure we are going to embark on with Sonic. It just builds upon what we already know and gives a fun road trip narrative full of effective emotional moments that actually hit quiet effectively in ways I didn’t expect it too. Then it can have great moments of humour that never landed flat it was perfectly timed and really made me laugh the dialogue was greatly done. Jeff just captured a truly great fun film which is what I wanted it to be and I go that and I would love to rewatch it again and again and Jeff knew exactly what direction was the best to bring this character into. Not until the post credit scene do we see the potential for a sequel but what made this film so good is that it dose not try to set up a sequel the whole time but it just goes about telling a good story which it does fantastically. Overall Jeff did a great job at capturing a fun film on one of everyone’s favourite vide game characters in an emotionally and narratively layered way great direction by Jeff
