Movie Review : Bombshell
Bombshell
This is a amazingly well acted film that presents one of the most impactful scandals in the entertainment industry! Jay Roach does a great job at delving into the ugliness of this story with sheer brutal force and commitment. Roach Never shied away from the sheer horror of what unfolds in this story but shows it head on no matter how disturbing it got he showed the events for how accurate and how things went down. The Three lead actresses gave outstanding performances which really elevated the films weak script and really engaged the audience to keep watching.
Firstly, Now I will say what bothered me and get it out of the way. The script was very weak and why I say that its because this film lacked the depth that it needed to really get the audience to invest more into these characters. The film relies on the performances from its cast to carry this film and luckily they have a strong cast that does just that as the film talks about very heavy themes that never felt fully formed. The film touches on the theme of Sexual harassment in the workplace and the impact it makes now to an extent they did achieve what they set out to do which was show the impact. I will say though even though I praise how they approached the story it should of been done with a lot more detail as the film lacks the substance It needed in order to really fully understand the story and all its details. It felt like a by the numbers of the story which it deserves better and should be told in way more depth. If this film had been two hours and thirty minutes I think it would of benefited from that as films like Ray, The Social Network and Straight Outta Compton are great examples of a lengthier runtime for a true story film and this film definitely needed that as I felt not as informed into the lead characters then I should have.
Secondly, Now for the positives the film really gripped me with the execution in the performances done by the entire cast involved. John Lithgow gave a fantastic supporting performance which was unsettling and terrifying to witness onscreen. Then the three leads of the film blew me away each giving such different kinds of performances that amazed me all for great different reasons. First you had Charlize who plays Megyn Kelly in a emotionally restrained way showing the true conflict that goes on inside of her bringing the emotional vulnerability through her eyes and genuine delivery. Then their is Nicole Kidman who plays Gretchen Carlson in a fierce and committed performance of a woman who is set on bringing such injustice to the full front in such a incredible emotional intensity that is truly spectacular. Then their is Margot Robbie who plays Kayla Pospisil She has some of the most emotionally raw moments I have ever seen Margot bring to the screen. Some times it didn’t even need a word just the sheer pain over her face made your heartbreak for her she was outstanding in one of her most emotionally captivating performances ever. Everyone in the supporting cast all give terrific work really giving their all and no matter how big or small their role was everyone brought their all.
Lastly, This film that touches upon a massive scandal that happened the film does the subject justice by showing the sheer emotional and tension that went on around the time. Even though the film has issues with not showing the depth that was required for this story it still pulled off a well structured telling of the scandal and how it unfolded in brutal honesty with truly outstanding performances from its three leads that elevate the weak script Bombshell is a terrific acted film with a story that will shock and disturb you I recommend everyone go see this film.
This film is based on the Roger Ailes story and the Fox Scandal that shook the world and how three woman exposed him.
Rated R : for sexual material and language throughout
Charlize Theron :Charlize gave one of the best performances she’s ever delivered onscreen! She plays Megyn Kelly in one of the most transformational roles she has ever done. She has had a great year this year earlier this year she gave a hilarious turn in the film long shot. she showed her comedic muscles in great length and here she once again shows her dramatic range in one of the best performances of her career. She takes the role of Megyn Kelly on with incredible commitment when I say she transforms she is truly unrecognizable in the film as from the brilliant makeup and then the way she walked and carried herself she took Kelly on in such a detailed portrayal you forget your even seeing Charlize she just totally disappeared and consumed herself from head to toe and damn did she do a remarkable job portraying her. She brings such a restrained emotional approach to her that was so powerfully shown onscreen as when you see her through this film she shows such a wide range of emotions that are so raw. You can see the inner conflict she faces but yet she does not show it on her face. That to me is so brilliant as Charlize has shown has emotionally expressive she can be onscreen and do it well and she does that here but to an extent. She more keeps to herself and why I also call this one of her finest performances she has ever done is because it is such a different kind of performance we have seen. Sure she is in a drama which she has tackled before but in the way she tackles the character and brings her emotions to the screen is very different. She can like I say be so emotionless on the outside but on the inside be fighting a storm of feelings and their are these subtle looks she will give to the camera that tells so much by saying so little. When she also speaks you feel the genuine authentic belief she has in what she is saying she speaks it like It as if she means it and you feel the sheer impact it with her incredible passion to the dialogue she speaks. She wraps herself up in every moment of this film and delivers one of her finest performances of her career in a emotionally restrained but yet such powerful portrayal of Megyn Kelly that truly amazed me.
Nicole Kidman : Kidman delivers a fierce and emotionally passionate performance! Kidman has been having a great last few years with her great work in Lion, Big Little Lies and now this film she has been delivering top notch performances and here this is no different. She brings her portrayal of Gretchen Carlson to life with her sheer intensity to the role that really stood out. She dose not have a major role in the film she is definitely a supporting role in the film but for the scenes she has she makes the most of with her incredible depth she brought. She has the most emotionally expressive performance and what I mean by that is that her role really shows these really showy moments that dominate the screen in explosive emotion that steals the frame. Their are are multiple scenes that pop out as their is a scene when she is reporting it to her lawyers and you can see the sheer anger in her eyes and sheer hate she has for what is going on around her and you can’t help but get swept up in her performance. She has This genuine emotional way of getting you to see it as real and it does not feel acted and Nicole Is remarkable at doing that though this film making it seem so natural. She also has such heartbreaking moments of vulnerability that makes you feel for her as when she finds out that not one person at that point had stepped forward from Fox News she breaks down into tears and she fights it back but it floods out. She does justice to who she is playing by showing the completive layers and the emotional pain that went on in her head at the time Nicole brings this supporting performance she gives in the film and nearly steals the entire film with her work in the film as she is so captivating as its such a emotionally intense role she takes on with such intense emotional pain and she makes it feel real and delves deep into the role to give the most respectful and accurate portrayal of her as possible. Nicole is a tour de force giving a truly outstanding performance that is one of her best performances.
Margot Robbie : Margot Robbie gives one of her most emotionally raw performances that blew me away! Robbie plays a supporting role in this film and is the newcomer to the studio and just really wants to make a good impression. When she is sexually embarrassed and taken advantage of she delivers some of the most emotionally powerful acting she has ever done. As for a lot of it she is very much like Charlize where she is in conflict within herself and the mental pain she is going through is heartbreaking to watch unfold. As in the beginning we see Margot so hopeful and full of sheer optimism and then by the halfway point she is just torn and in such a dark place emotionally not knowing how to digest what is going on and how she expresses it onscreen is so raw. She has a moment when she is talking to her boss and that scene almost brought me to tears from the sheer look on her face of how uncomfortable she was and how scared she looked you just wanted to help her and Margot shows her emotional layers so greatly in this film. She is also a supporting performance but even though she is she captivates the screen with subtle emotion that speaks powerful volumes and then the next she will be spewing her words out like she has been bottling them up inside needing to get them out in such a fast pace and seeing the feeling of relief on her face but also sheer sadness and its brilliant. As every moment she came onscreen she lit it up with her amazing onscreen presence and fantastic charisma Brought to her role and Margot delivers her dialogue in heartbreaking honesty that is truly honest of the best and most emotionally shattering performances I have ever seen her deliver she is truly outstanding.
Jay Roach : Roach gave another solid directed film! I loved his work with Trumbo a few years ago which was one of my favourite films that came out that year. That film also was based on a true story and I loved how he delved deep into that story which is why I am kinda confused he didn’t take that same approach with this film. Now don’t get me wrong I think his work on this film is fantastic but he definitely should of gone deeper into the three leads lives as I was invested into them for sure but I feel if he spent more time with them individually and establishing who they are as people I would of connected with them a lot better. He also brings this hyper fast paced feel to the frame which I really liked and a lot of quippy dialogue that fit there mold of the characters and their personalities that was well presented onscreen and fit the tone of the film. Jay also discusses some very heavy handed topics that are going on today that is very relevant and he dose not sugarcoat the dark tone that this film is centred around and at times it makes you feel very uncomfortable but that is the point and I like that approach as he shows the brutal honesty of what went on. Sure he could of delved deeper into the lives of these woman who the film is centred around but besides that I think he did a great job with the tone and style he set as well as getting great performances out of his three leads. Jay Roach brings a fast paced tone with brutal honesty and great performances from his cast he did a terrific job at brining this story to the screen another greatly directed film by Jay Roach.
