Movie Review : Charlie's Angels (2019)

Charlie’s Angel’s (2019)
This film is just forgettable! I was hoping to have fun with this film which I did to an extent but the flaws outweighed the positives in this film. The film has a actually promising cast as the characters are all actually really fun and enjoyable to go on this ride with but it’s the situations the characters are thrust into and the by the numbers predictability of the villain and the motives the villain had that just felt very generic. That’s the best way to describe the film is that it has a cool set of characters and style but the very lazy narrative overshadows the fun you have when viewing this film.

Firstly, What this film’s problem is yes it’s the narrative and how it’s executed but also the action set pieces used through this film. Since this film is based off the massively successful show that sparked the films from the 2000’s their is definitely a expectation that it has to live up to and the film lacks the action fun that the show and the past films had. As when the characters get into tense situations it should feel intense and gripping but also fun and it has none of that it felt very stereotypical as in they didn’t think of any creative ways to make the action work for this specific style or story it just threw random action set pieces that would come out of nowhere and just go with it and it felt like their was no creativity put into the action portion of this film which is a big aspect of the film since it is an action flick and it lacks the fun aspect but also the intensity it carried as well so well in the past. That’s one of the big glaring issues I had was how the plot just really didn’t try to make the action sequences at all fun or interesting to watch unfold.

Secondly, This film has a really good cast of characters and the actresses that play them are well cast in their parts but what is so frustrating is that these characters are put into such terribly written situations. As the film has a cool concept from the look of it but once it actually tries to go deeper it’s nothing but shallow and it has nothing interesting to tell for a arc or narrative for this film so here you have really cool characters thrust into a terrible story. If the film was placed and written better I definitely would of enjoyed this film a lot instead of just a bit. As the film hits you repeatedly of female empowerment and I get it but what makes no sense is why go out of the way to do that when the whole concept of what Charlie’s Angel’s was and has always been was female empowerment the show showed that and so did the early 2000’s films they didn’t have to go out of the way to remind people like this film does because we already knew that going into it and it was more focused on showing these cool characters and story instead of reminding us every five seconds about female empowerment as that’s what this film does a ton of.

Lastly, Charlie’s Angel’s (2019) is a film that has a great cast and great characters that are used in a weak story that could of been improved with better structuring of its action set pieces and the overall story that felt weak and made the film feel very unoriginal in its approach to the attempt to bring back such a beloved franchise Charlie’s Angel’s was a disappointment that could of been better with some tweaking.

The film revolves around these three girls that are taking on this massive business that is attempting to make a piece of technology that will be used for dangerous use instead of good the angels are called in to prevent that from happening.

Rated PG - 13 : for action/violence, language and some suggestive material

Kristen Stewart : Kristen gives one of strongest if not her strongest comedic performance ever! Stewart in past films like twilight and some other films never showed the required charisma for those roles and here she seems like she’s evolved greatly and has become more expressive within her roles and this performance shows just that. She plays one of the Angels and damn is she entertaining she fires these funny one liners left right and centre and it works as for some it could see annoying that she’s constantly relying on jokes to carry her performance forward but I think it’s so greatly approached by Kristen. As she dose it in a way that comes from this rebellious side she channels and we also do learn quite a bit about her backstory it’s brief but we do and it brings more context to why she is the way she is and I thought Kristen’s approach to the more serious sides of the character was perfectly shown as I’m not saying this is her best performance but it’s one of them because I’ve never seen her show such solid comedic range period as she knows when the time is appropriate to bring one and it works very well but then Can switch it up when she has to and show the more vulnerable side of her and she does it so greatly. She’s the best performance in this film and she definitely is a scene stealer out of the cast as she brought such charisma and energy needed to do this character well and I’ve never seen Kristen so engaging in a performance like this in some time now and she’s funny she’s dramatic and you can tell she is having great fun with this role and she in a lot of ways carry’s this film and makes it such fun Kristen gives a entertaining comedic but also emotionally effective performance you can’t help but love.

Elizabeth Banks : Elizabeth Banks did a ok job on this film that could of been better. She did the Pitch Perfect sequel which was good but not as good as the first but overall was ok here she tries to reboot a big franchise name like Charlie’s Angel’s and its a mixed bag. As she even gives a good performance in it to but for her direction she seemed halfway their with a good film as she had the likeable and engaging characters, the style and pacing was great but the plot brings all that down sadly as it wasn’t engaging and I know she also had a hand in screenwriting this film and she did not come up with a good concrete engaging plot to compliment this fun characters we are introduced too. It felt very generic and I had no interest in the villain and I felt no intensity brought to the film when the situation called for it with the action set pieces it seemed more like she was more focused on making these characters look cool rather then engage the audience with a interesting story as well. She could of done better with the writing and direction not saying her direction is terrible but if she made some adjustments to the film it would of been a solid fun film instead of an ok film with characters you like but a plot you don’t and that’s what happened and Elizabeth has proven she’s an ok director but she can do better then what she brought here it was more style and less substance and it made the film suffer. Overall she gave direction that was ok but could of been way better if she focused more on the narrative of the film instead of the style of it
