Movie Review : Judy

Judy
This film is a beautiful heartbreaking portrait of what Judy Garland was like towards the later part of her life. This film hit me harder then I thought it would probably for the fact that I know and a lot others know that Judy led a very lonely and heartbreaking life as the film studio was incredibly harsh on her in ways that made me disgusted. They treated her more like a star and not like a human being as everything she wanted to do as simple as eat a burger or go in the pool they wouldn’t allow which is unbelievable she was unable to be happy or enjoy her youth as the film studio gripped a hold of her and put restrictions on her that prevented her to live her life the way she wanted so by the time she was an adult the damage and the emotional scars that had carved into her had done damage to her and really effected her. The film is an emotional punch to the gut for sheer heartache we see her suffer time and time again Judy shows the human and not the star of who Judy was as she just longed for love and affection and this film shows that as painfully honest as possible as it doesn’t shy away from the harder things that happened to her and show what it was like for her in the later part of her life which is brought to the screen by Zellweger in an outstanding portrayal of the legendary actress. The film focuses on the performances she did in London and really shows the struggle she had with it this is one of the most honest and heartbreaking bio pics I’ve seen in a very long time.

Firstly, Renee Zellweger is a tour de force in this film! Bringing any ones life to the screen is no easy feat as you have a massive responsibility to live up to as you have to portray them as accurate and respectful as possible and tackling a star like Judy Garland one of the most beloved film stars ever is not easy to do and Renée brought such a grace and approach to Judy that was jaw dropping as she didn’t look at her from the celebrity she was looked as she played her for the human behind the celebrity she shows the struggle she went through and the hardships she had in life and Zellweger totally disappears into the role as she truly transforms in one of the most heartbreakingly incredible performances of the year. Everyone else also brought great performances from Michael  Gambon and a great Supporting turn from Finn Wittrock the whole cast were solid surrounding the film in great performances their was not a weak performance in the entire cast everyone gave their A game.

Secondly, This film is a great conversation on how the film Industry treated Judy and yes I have already spoke about how badly she was treated but seriously though this film doesn’t make itself repetitive with what it has to say the message is that if you start treating your talent like a number instead of a human being it can have an everlasting impact on their life psychically and emotionally and that is what Judy is an underlining message about that we got to do better at treating people better as it hits this message in a very realistic tone that was very appropriate and well handled. They also showed the sides of how she became addicted to pills but it didn’t help that the studio thrust them onto her at a young age and so later in her life she got addicted in many ways to them and they do show the happy moments when we see them but when we see the sad moments they truly are sad.

Lastly, Judy is a heartbreakingly beautiful film that shows Judy in the later part of her life but as the film shows her struggle it also is a reminder of how brilliant of a performer she was and the grace she gave us through music and film and Renée brought that so beautifully to the screen this film shows the heartbreaking true story of one of the greatest performers to ever grace the stage this film is an absolute triumph I recommend everyone go see this film.

Rated PG - 13  : for substance abuse, thematic content, some strong language, and smoking

This film shows Judy Garland in the later part of her life when she put on her shows in London and the things that happened in front of the stage and behind it

Renée Zellweger : Renee have a emotional punch of a performance of Judy Garland! Renée has always dazzled me when she can sink her teeth into dramatic work if it’s Chicago or even Jerry Maguire she’s always been a solid actress I’ve always enjoyed seeing onscreen she here she tackles one of the most iconic figures in Hollywood history. She approaches the role of Judy from a very real and vulnerable place emotionally she doesn’t do a impression or just capture the look of the actress but she embodies the actress in such a authentic and honest portrayal that was amazing to watch unfold onscreen. She was very soft spoken and very sensitive in the way that she hated when people would constantly try to control her image or what she could do and Renée brought this approach to the role that was very respectful as you have to with this role because she has a legacy and you got to portray that as honest as possible and she steps up to the task and delivers just that. Theirs moment when she’s with her kids and she has this very protective and childlike innocence when she was with them and she was truly happy and then the moment she wasn’t with them their was this disconnect and she became very quiet and very reserved and Zellweger shows that in spades as she can convey such emotional filled scenes with a glance, look or a smile and it can be so subtle but be so effective. Theirs moments where she will have burst of laughter and it will week your heart as Zellweger looks just like her it’s eerie in the sense that she looks so much alike Judy from her smile the way she would walk and the way she sung and especially how she talk she totally consumed herself head deep into the role giving a transformative performance at times I even forget it was her as it really makes you think it is Judy she embodies her so perfectly capturing all the aspects of who she was and shining that onscreen with such charismatic energy and emotion. She could be gentle and happy and then heartbreakingly Low the next and sometimes it would happen within the same scene that she would transition those emotions and Zellweger did it so brilliantly she made it look effortless. She gave one of the best performances of her career giving an accurate portrait of who Judy was with such sheer passion and commitment she delivers a heartbreaking performance that will have you in tears but stunned by the sheer brilliance of what she’s bringing to the screen Zellweger is magnificent!

Rupert Goold : Rupert did a magnificent job at bringing Judy to the screen! Goold’s work I am familiar with as he did a film a few years back called true story which I really enjoyed and so I know what his style is like and here he brings the life of Garland to the screen in such emotional honestly. What I liked most about what he brings to this film is that he shows the real sadness that Judy felt that a lot of people may not know about that and he does it in a way that’s respectful to her and her legacy while showing such a honest portrayal of her he didn’t look at her as a celebrity he wanted to show the movie star she was for sure but at the same time he was able to show that aspect but also the more personal and human aspect of her life of what she was like off the stage and that balance was perfectly done as their are flashbacks to how she was treated back when she was young then it would transition back to her as an adult. I loved that because since she was young she was treated terribly so you see what it was like when she was young and then the impact it made on her as an adult and he shows that so powerfully through the film as instead of trying to take on her entire career in one film he instead approached her story from when she was performing In London and focus on that aspect of her life and then just explore what was going on in her life professionally and personally as well and I thought that was very well shown and he gets a outstanding performance from Renée Zellweger giving a truly amazing performance and also giving this very heartbreaking but honest underlining message that we need to treat people better because she wasn’t and it’s sad to watch because he shows how she just ached for love and he never avoided the tougher aspects of her life he took it head on and showed every side to her as he really made people see what it was like for her which made me connect to her more when watching it and overall making it more emotional for his realistic approach to the story which was so well done Rupert does a magnificent job with his direction here.
