Movie Review : The Last Laugh

The Last Laugh
This film is a enjoyable film that has great heart, humour and well earned laughs throughout. I didn't hear a lot of things about this film I only discovered recently that it was a film coming to Netflix staring Chevy Chase and Richard Dreyfuss as the leads of the film and that was more then enough  to get me to check this out. Now is it what I expected? Yes it was I wasn't expecting a laugh out loud comedy but rather a enjoyable time with this two cinematic legends having a great time onscreen. Richard steals the show with his fantastic performance and great humour and emotion driven through the film. The first twenty minutes do feel slow  but it dose pick up and really gets entertaining to some people they may not like it because some may expect this big comedy where at the centre of it without spoiling anything it has the comedy aspect for sure but it has a great deal of heart and emotion that I didn't expect for it to have but really was effective in its delivery of it.

Firstly, Richard Dreyfuss is one of the most enjoyable character actors I enjoy watching onscreen but he hasn't been in a lot of films lately so seeing him here brought a massive smile to my face as he really shines in the role he has and gives a very entertaining performance. He brings great layers of comedy but also great emotional depth that really worked well and he steps up to it and delivers it greatly due to his great emotional range. Chevy was great with what he had and dose do a fine job in the film. I wanted to become more invested in his character as well as Richard has this great character arc and depth to him so we get to learn a lot about him and that's what Chase's character was lacking was the lack of character substance to get me invested into his character that’s a flaw that the film has is the lack of substance for his character as he feels very hollow so their isn’t much for me to feel interested in for his character.

Secondly, This film felt very much like the Bucket List meets Last Vegas And is that a bad thing? Not at all but it is a plot that at times feels very similar in its execution. But it’s the sheer heart and great emotion that’s packed into it that you don’t expect that overcome its at times poorly structured story.

Lastly, The Last laugh feels like a plot line you’ve seen before in other films but it’s the great chemistry Shared by its lead actors it’s fantastic genuine laughs and great heart that makes this film an enjoyable watch and a film is recommend people check out.

Rated R : language and some drug use

This film revolves around a retired Comedy manager who runs into a old client and friend who he takes on the road and gets him the spot in the spotlight he deserves

Richard Dreyfuss : Dreyfuss delivers a pertinence full of emotion and humour. This character actor has been in some of my favourite films from Jaws to What about Bob? This actor always amazes me in everything he dose and once again he delivers another entertaining performance that will make you laugh and also emotional as well. Richard plays a man who never had a shot at fame but never took it and now at his age he will take his chance to be a comedian in the way he always wanted. The way Richard shows this onscreen comes across as charming and really entertaining. He’s always giving his absolute all no matter what and it really shows in the film he has this sparkle in his eye where you can see he’s just having such great fun onscreen with the role he’s playing. But he also delivers fantastic emotional depth that is so layered you can’t help but root for him and Richard has this warm quality to his performance you can’t help but love but he can be so charming in one moment then just make you laugh and the next really feel for him and get very emotional. He’s able to be loud and comedic without it coming across as over the top and keeping it contained while giving great emotional moments as well that feel so genuine and real and both are so well balanced in his performance. Richard gives one of his best performances in years that is charming, emotional and all around entertaining. When he is being sarcastic he has great comedic timing and knows when to say a joke and they always land and then he knows when to be Serious and really show raw emotion and it comes across amazingly well. Overall Richard gives a truly outstanding performance.

Greg Pritikin : Greg gives good direction on this film. This filmmaker I am unfamiliar with but after seeing what he did here I am impressed. He was able to tell a very entertaining story that can feel like we’ve seen this kind of story before but give it so much heart and humour that you don’t anticipate and as well gets great performances from his cast while also giving the audience a fun time with these two legendary leads by telling a story that people can relate to with the themes woven in the film at the same time have a fun time viewing it with it’s fun and enjoyable premise. His style is very upbeat and fun but he’s also not afraid to get very emotional and I love that because that’s the balance this film is that it’s comedic but also emotional and both work perfectly together in the film resulting in fantastic moments in the film. He dose a very good job directing this film giving great heart humour and emotion giving an all around fun time great direction.
