Movie Review : Widows

Widows
This film is a knockout by Steve McQueen! Widows is a film that was so wrongly marketed which made it look like a fast paced thriller which it is not. That’s part of the reason I think a lot of people I’ve talked to didn’t like it because they were misled. The film has a thrilling element to it but it’s not the tone the film goes for its more about how these woman try and cope with their situations and finishes the film with a greatly executed thrilling moment that builds throughout the entire film and is executed magnificently by the final act of the film.

Firstly, this film is what Oceans 8 couldn’t achieve now before you call me sexiest I’ll explain what I mean by what I said. The film Oceans 8 is a film I wanted to enjoy but Film critic Jeremy Jahns said it best that Widows dose the same genre which is a heist type film but Widows executes it better. I couldn’t agree more as Oceans 8 felt like they just gave the females a plot that appealed to females in a very sexist way  like the whole met gala and fashion aspect  setting it felt very underwhelming and why can’t these strong females do the big heist jobs the guys can do like in Oceans eleven. Why do they have to do the girl directed plot lines they can hold up their own against the guys in big gritty heist as widows proved that.  Widows dose that they give the females the big grand heist job that’s totally badass with females and it worked and I loved that. That’s what I loved so much about the film these females were never written or shown as a person that was reliant on the male character each of them even though they had very emotional moments at times can hold themselves on their own and I love that. And each guy in the film was totally sleezy and terrible and really showed the woman at the centre of it as greatly written full fleshed out characters that isn’t waving the feminist flag but also acknowledges it without making it feel preachy.

Secondly, What I loved so much about the film is it feels so authentic and realistic. This film is the most realistic take on a heist film I’ve ever seen. But it’s so much more then just a heist film it’s so multi layered brining such a honest look on these woman’s lives and I feels so real and that your observing over these lives that then cross one another led paths and the chemistry by the cast is terrific you really believe they are just widows that want to get by and keep their head above water and then slowly form a friendship with one another that feels earned and so natural.

The Performances from the entire cast is stellar Viola Davis is an absolute marvel in the film giving a truly fantastic
performance as well as the entire cast involved no one gives a weak performance no matter how big or small everyone brings their A game and delivers on all fronts.

Lastly, This film is a great film with a greatly executed story by McQueen led by its strong cast and its astonishing performances at the front of it filled with mixes of drama, grief and a heist underdone that really mixes well into it resulting in a incredibly well layered film that is so much more then it seems and I love that Steve McQueen once again brings  great work to the screen with Widows I recommend everyone check this film out.

This film centres around 4 woman after hardships and tragedy fall upon them they must do a heist job their husbands left behind in order to pay back the man their husbands wronged

Rated R : for violence, language throughout, and some sexual content/nudity

Viola Davis : Davis again delivers another dynamite dramatic performance that crackles and shines. Viola brings great emotional depth to her performance and a vulnerability that really show her range as she’s proven before and delivers here once again. She plays a Widow who is grieving but trying to keep herself together and the sheer execution of that done by Davis is magnificent she really makes her character leap off the page and show it in such a raw and real way that feels so authentic. In the film she goes through such an emotional  arc and in the Beginning she’s very emotional vulnerable and overtime she becomes more thick skinned and really develops a tougher outlook on things and I love the transition her character makes because it results in great emotional and impactful moments done amazingly well by Viola and her great strength as an actor. She can tear you apart from a word and break your heart with a glance into her eye she just really is committed as always to her character and really makes you feel for her even though she may make choices that are questionable you stick with her because you understand what she’s going through and Viola chews up all the scenery with her fantastic performance driven throughout the film that is emotional, raw and at feels very honest as well as a very layered performance Viola once again dominates the film with amazing onscreen presence and a terrific performance.

Elizabeth Debicki : Elizabeth Delivers a stellar Supporting turn in this film! Debicki did a great job earlier this year with her solid work in the Tale and once again gives another top notch performance in this film. Elizabeth plays a woman who gets physically abused by her husband and verbally abused by her mother and you can see from just the sheer heartbreaking emotion she drives in her performance. She dose not talk and is very passive letting people walk all over her as she’s so used to it but by the halfway point of the film her character makes a great transition where she toughness up and really stands her ground and I love that. She didn’t become a one note character but became a very complex character with great depth and Elizabeth dose a incredible job at bringing all of that sheer emotion to the full front. Theirs a moment in the beginning where she gets abused by her mother and husband and it’s heartbreaking because of what she’s going through but also how she executes it onscreen. She’s very quiet and passive and you can see the terror in her eyes and sadness in her face with a single tear or just a glance she can show you how she’s feeling and Elizabeth dose a a Marvelous job at conveying such strong emotion to her character. The the next she can be very strong willed and be full of anger and rage and go on a full rant that feels so honest real and raw and something that’s been bottling up inside her aching to get out and she delivers it masterfully with great delivery. Elizabeth is truly incredible in this film and I hope she doesn’t get overlooked as she strings great strength in the film with a fantastic supporting performance that deserves to be recognized.

Daniel Kaluuya : Daniel Gives a terrifying supporting turn in this film! Daniel fresh off of Black Panther and Get Out gives another solid performance in Widows. Daniel plays a tough, Quiet and intimidating character that is played brilliantly by Daniel. What makes him so scary is his quietness and unpredictability and Daniel shows that in amazing emotional range. He keeps to himself but has these big moments where he’ll lash out in strong violence but remains calm through it and that to me is so scary then if he was to become emotionally raged. He delivers his lines in such a calm voice and even when he is beating the crap out of someone he is laughing and joking around and it’s terrifying but showcases amazing acting by Daniel. As we haven’t seen him channel such dark sides of him before and to see him explore that was so interesting to watch unfold onscreen. He really sheds so many layers to this character and his range as an Actor and he’s not in the film for much but for the screen time he has damn he’s captivating to watch. Daniel once again gives another Great performance showing sides to him that will terrify you and captivate you.

Steve McQueen : Steve Again directs another masterful story with great style. The man who gave us the cinematic masterpiece that was 12 years a Slave gives us a greatly directed film that showcases his take on a totally different kind of film then what were used to seeing him give us. We’ve never seen him explore a gritty heist style type film and he directs it brilliantly capturing a realistic showcase on the environment he surrounds the film in along with amazing performances from the entire cast. Adding to it he doesn’t make the film a one note film it’s very dimensional it’s a heist type film but it’s not a heist film it’s also a film about grieving and racism and corruption and he is able to tackle and discuss these topics in great execution. Steve McQueen keeps you entertained from the beginning to the end with his great vision executed amazingly well onscreen keeping you engaged to the end overall McQueen delivers another greatly directed film showcasing his strengths in other films then just dramas as Widows proves he’s capable of so much again McQueen delivers on all fronts.
