Movie Review : The Kitchen

The Kitchen
This film was so boring and bland! The films marketing made this seem like it was a big badass gangster flick which it definitely markets itself as very strongly. The performances are actually fine I don’t know why people are complaining about the actors as they did a fine job it’s just the script sucked. The film suffers from a dull and uninteresting story as it is very much a film that never shows any of the action they talk about. As their are many scenes where they talk about what they’ve done to get to where they are and how their such badass’s but we never see what that stuff was and it results in such a boring film as they just walk around collecting money and looking cool that’s it. It’s definitely a let down as this film I was looking forward too as the three main leads were such a great choice and they could of been used so much better with some script adjustments as this film is very much like a kitchen it’s got the right ingredients but it turns out to just leave a bad taste in your mouth.

First off, The only positives I can give this film is the performances. Well In particular the performance that stands out among the rest is Elizabeth Moss who gives the best performance of this film as she is in a lot of ways the only character who has the most fleshed out about her character as they give context to her current situation and you really do invest in her character and Moss was able to pull a great performance despite the poor script she did the best with what she had and she delivers a really solid performance in the film. Melissa and Tiffany are also good as they are great also but sadly the script didn’t allow them to really show much of their characters layers as they seemed very one dimensional compared to Moss’s character which makes you not as invested not saying their performance was bad but just that you don’t latch onto them the way you do with Moss they still contributed solid work as well.

Secondly, The film suffers from lack of creativity as well. As I’ve seen a ton of crime films and so the characters were very interesting but the plot doesn’t find a way to use them in a way that feels new or different it feels similar to a lot of crime films that come before it and I felt if they worked a bit harder on the screenplay and adjusted a bit of the minor characters as well this film could of been a very enjoyable film but structure and story is everything without a good script your film can fall apart which is sadly what happens here as it doesn’t try anything new but instead just uses things from other crime films.

Lastly, The Kitchen was a let down it’s not the worst film of the year but it’s not good either it was boring bland and the actors all have great work but even their great performances couldn’t save the film from its poorly executed story which was terribly told The Kitchen is a film I won’t remember by the end of the year.

Rated R : for violence, language throughout and some sexual content

This film tells the story of three wives who’s husbands are in prison and take care of their criminal business and start their own empire

Elizabeth Moss : Moss gives a strong emotionally evocative performance. Moss never gives a bad performance despite what the film or role is she always commits 100% and here she does again and single handily steals the show. She plays a abuse victim as her husband beats her and she is scared but has the best character arc through this whole film as she goes from a very emotionally drained person to a leader and a total badass and the transition onscreen in amazing as she’s able to play both parts of that in her character so smoothly. She’s able to play the very vulnerable sensitive aspects of her performance so honestly and raw onscreen you just really feel for her and then as she starts to gain confidence and begin to do things her way you root for her as Moss intrigues you with her character and really draws you in with what she’s going through and even though she’s doing really bad things you understand why and you want her to come out on top and Moss plays this really multi layered character so well as she brings great range and strong passion to each frame lighting it up with her fantastic energy that just roars through each moment and you can’t take your eyes off of her she plays a emotionally battered woman that becomes a total badass and it’s all due to Moss’s amazing talent she brings to the screen and steals the show with her tremendous performance.

Andrea Berloff : Andrea is a great writer I am very familiar with her she has given solid screenplays with straight Outta Compton which was one of my favourite films that year and so when I heard she was going to make her first ever directed film as a crime thriller I was intrigued and oh my was I let down. Not only was it a disappointing film but I was so let down by Andrea and she has written great films and she wrote this film to and directed it and I don’t know what happened as the characters felt hollow and very little backstory given to them the main meat of the story felt scattered and the film was bland and boring giving little to none action to watch. It was a mess and this is easily her worst written film and to know this is the first film she’s directed has me nervous if she directs in the future as she did get great performances don’t get me wrong if she put more time into the story and shaping it up a bit it could of been fine but she just totally misfired with this film which is disappointing as I really love her as a screenwriter she used so many tropes and things from other crime films and didn’t try to think outside the box and try something new and instead just copied other films and it just let me with a bad taste in my mouth all of it was just not done to it’s full potential that’s the best way to describe the film and her direction on the film.
