Movie Review : Good Boys

Good Boys
This film was uncomfortably unfunny! This film as of now is getting solid reviews and I have seen a massive amount of coming of age films and teen flicks and so by this point their are certain tropes that are used in films and this film felt like Superbad and I mean exactly like Superbad. As that film takes place on one day about them trying to get alcohol to bring to a party this is about these kids trying to get to party for their friend to have his kiss with a girl. The film uses a lot of recycled and already used ideas from past films and had very cringe moments throughout the film as the jokes for 95% of the film just didn’t land for me I wasn’t laughing their were a few moments I did laugh but not much as the comedy just didn’t land the way it should of.

Firstly, This film had the great potential to do something so entertaining. From the trailer it looked like a fun raunchy take on a really funny and fun story and instead of crafting something original they use films that came before it as a crutch to tell this story not as it uses many tropes and tired jokes that either have been used in other films in very similar ways. The film falls flat for its fault at not being able to craft a entertaining story at the heart of it the film relies on the raunchy comedy and simple jokes to make you laugh. What they should of done was craft the story first then the comedy as when you have the base for your story then you can surround it with what you want but the story and how it’s told should always come first and here they put comedy over story and it suffers from it as their is 30 jokes flying at you every moment and it’s funny for the first 10 minutes and then it gets tiring real fast. As the film exhausts itself early on from not knowing when to shift gears and take a break from the comedy. Even in the film Superbad it knew when to draw back and shift the tone of the scene up this film has no self awareness when to do that which is one of its many faults. The film just is raunchy because they can be you can have over the top funny comedy but don’t rely on it to move your narrative forward you need a concrete story to be able to craft a well done one which it does not. The film just shows these kids going into ridiculous situations over and over and only by the last half of the film do they start to get me invested but by then that was way to late to get me invested within the last 20 Minutes.

Secondly, The only actor that did well in the film was Jacob Tremblay who I loved in the film Room and here gives a fun comedic performance and he really gives the best performance of the film as he’s the only one self aware of what film he’s in and knows when to be funny and then be dramatic and he was a lot of fun to watch throughout the film everyone else was either way to much comedically or just not written well enough to even care for their characters and it’s disappointing as this film had such potential to be a fantastic film.

Lastly, Good Boys is a bland and tired concept that has been many times before it if you’ve seen American Pie, Superbad this film rips tropes and concepts from many comedies that come before it instead of crafting something original that could of been so Much fun but instead just gave us this scattered plot with uncomfortable comedy that felt forced and had very few good laughs this film is a disappointing film that could of been better.

Rated R : for strong crude sexual content, drug and alcohol material, and language throughout - all involving tweens

This film centres on a group of kids that are making it Their mission to go to this kissing party so their one friend can kiss his crush and they get into crazy and wild things along the way

Jacob Tremblay : Jacob was the only fun performance in this film! I loved his work in the film Room that came out a few years ago and here he branches into the comedy side something I haven’t seen from him before and wow is he funny. He brings such a fun and entertaining performance to the screen in this film as he packs so much great comedy in his performance and the thing is he has done now both comedy and drama so he’s very self aware of when to switch things up and pull back on things in his performance and Jacob was a blast to watch as in the film he knew when the best time was to drop a joke and it would land for most of the time and he could also have great genuine moments of emotion too as he was able to really get you to care for his character and pull for him throughout this entire film. Seeing him in a over the top raunchy comedy I didn’t expect and he does it very well as it seemed so natural to him as some of the jokes are uncomfortable at times but Jacob really brings his all and shows his strength as a comedic talent in this film and really was able to get me to laugh and he also brought such amazing qualities to his performance as his range in the film was fantastic as well as he really did a great job at bringing this character to life onscreen with such great charisma and energy that just shows amazingly well onscreen. He does so well on the comedy and on the more dramatic elements as well and Jacob definitely is the best part of this film for me he is and he just gives such a fun and entertaining performance to watch that will have you laughing all the way through.

Gene Stupnitsky : Gene did a poor job at directing this film. Gene is an amazing writer as he’s written for the show the office but he’s also written some poor films like Bad Teacher and here he just couldn’t stick the landing. He wrote a interesting concept I’ll give him that but the execution of it was so poorly done as it just felt like it relied way to heavily on the jokes to carry the film where he should of actually cared about the story and then work on the jokes. As the film was so uncomfortable at times as the jokes were either not funny or just eh as it felt forced as he tries to make you laugh every minute and I didn’t feel invested in the characters because they weren’t fleshed out enough for me to care about them and I should of but it’s all because it’s poorly written and directed and he also just copied so many past teen flicks that have done it better to see if he can copy that formula and it didn’t work as at times it felt like a direct rip off of Superbad and it just didn’t try to do anything new or original he dropped the ball massively on this film as it just wasn’t entertaining and I felt like I had seen this film a thousand times before Gene did a poorly directed film with Good Boys
