Movie Review : Child's Play (2019)

Child's Play (2019)
This is such a boring movie! I had not seen any of the previous Chucky films before watching this film and so I went into the movie with a fresh pair of eyes as I wanted to be surprised. After seeing the film I am so let down by the film as it not only was a bad film but was so boring. The point of a film is to get you invested within the characters and the narrative within the first five minutes. This film fails to do both of those things as its pacing also was terribly Done as it felt like it dragged on and on and theirs no real scares or action until the last ten minutes of the film. This is just another failed  attempt at remaking a popular property. Childs Play is painfully slow and lacks any sense of interest whatsoever.

Firstly, The Film lacks any substance of fun to be had by the glaring tropes through this film. Meaning this film is so predictable at every corner you have a sense of what’s going to happen the entire time and it’s no fun if you know what’s going to happen I like to be surprised the recycled tropes were annoying and totally took me out of the film by its crutch on them. It uses jump scares, the overly dramatic music and the same beats of a lot of horror films that have before it. Instead of trying something different it treads the same waters of so many horror films which made it very predictable and very tropey.

Secondly, Their was no life injected into this film the performances were all mediocre at best and even Mark Hamill who voices the possessed doll try’s his hardest to elevate the film with his performance even though he didn’t he did do a decent job in the film I will give the film that positive is that Hamill is the only saving grace of this film. Even Aubrey Plaza who I loved in Ingrid Goes West in 2017 wasn’t able to save this film from its incredible dullness. The characters felt hollow and empty I never felt attached to any of the key characters so the minute the film ended I immediately forgot who they were. The characters should of been fleshed out more as they just were dull and uninteresting expect for Chucky. The film also fails to give any effective scares because you see them coming from a mile away. So the film fails on a ton of levels it fails as a horror film, it fails at bringing Chucky with new life with this new film and all around it fails as a film in general.

Lastly, Childs Play is a film that misses out on the scares and uses horror tropes we’ve seen time and time again that made for a way to predictable beat by beat by the numbers horror film we’ve seen before instead of trying something new with this franchise it just borrows material from other horror films. Surrounded with hollow and forgettable characters even Hamill performance even though it’s good couldn’t save this film Child’s Play is a film that deserved a better script as Chucky deserved so much better then the film we got.

This film centres around a mother and a son and when the new Buddi doll comes out and the one they get has a few glitches in the software it starts operating on its own in very violent ways.

Rated R : for bloody horror violence, and language throughout

Mark Hamill : Hamill provides a scary and effective performance that is fun to be had. Mark Hamill is worldwide known for his legendary involvement in the Star Wars franchise but he’s very underrated for his voice work as his voice work in things such as The Joker in the Batman animated shows and movies is phenomenal he’s lent his voice to some amazing characters over the years and his sheer charisma and energy he brings to it is fantastic. Here Mark Hamill gives a very light hearted but also terrifying performance. As for a good half of the film he’s very friendly and nice and then he makes this shift with the character and then he goes into very dark territory emotionally with the character that just explodes with energy on the screen. Hamill brings a very warm feel to the character I haven’t seen explored before with the character and it’s crappy because you know what the end result of his intentions are going to be and knowing that makes it more terrifying. Hamill brings the charisma required to make the character pop onscreen as he Channels this very soft and sensitive tone that at times you feel for Chucky which I didn’t think I would be but due to Mark’s great energy brought to the screen he makes Chucky sympathetic and then he can explode in burst of rage with this amazing and dark voice that is brought to the character that makes him so unpredictable and terrifying to watch onscreen. Mark Hamill really steps up to the plate and delivers a solid performance that respects the Chucky legacy while bringing something new to the character we haven’t seen before with a great range of energy that is perfectly shown through his performance that ranges from heartwarming to terrifyingly unpredictable Mark Hamill truly has fun with the role and really relishes in it. Overall Hamill provides a solid performance to a otherwise dull film.

Lars Klevberg : Lars did a really really bad choice of direction on this film. This filmmaker is relatively unknown he did one film prior to this one which was a low budget film called Polaroid. Besides that he hasn’t done a big budget film like this and he takes on the whole legacy of this massive property that is loved by many and he doesn’t deliver. I admire he tried to bring the character into new territory but it didn’t service the character in the way it should of as for majority of the film it’s all build up until the last ten minutes of the film. Not saying I need to see violence all the time but that’s what the film is that it is a horror film and I didn’t feel satisfied with the scares or with the characters at all. I especially couldn’t stand the story as it lacked creativity and intrigue it felt like a horror film I’ve seen a hundred times before it. And Lars doesn’t really bring anything new to inject this new property with as it’s full of horror movie tropes that feel very cringe worthy and then the film takes a long time to pick up off the ground to really get started or get interesting in any sense. It didn’t show Chucky in the form we all wanted to see it felt more like a low budget TV movie it could of been so much better if their was some adjustments taken to the script and some tweaks with the direction it could of made for a enjoyable Chucky film sadly this film fell through due to its poor execution and lack of energy that was brought to this film Lars could of steered this film into a better territory for the film but ended up giving us a very dull and bland by the numbers film.
