Movie Review : Velvet Buzzsaw

Velvet Buzzsaw
This is one of Dan Gilroy’s most creative films yet! This is a film that had me intrigued from when I first heard about Jake Gyllenhaal And Dan Gilroy pairing up again as they crafted the masterful work of Nightcrawler a few years ago which to this day is one of my favourite films. Now is this film as good as Nightcrawler? No not even close but is it enjoyable? Yes it is but with its fair share of flaws. The film has a very interesting storyline but can feel convoluted and slow at times. My biggest gripe I had with this film was that it marketed it as a Horror film but when you see it the film is a Triller with dark moments but I wouldn’t label it as a horror film though. So it was a bit misleading from the marketing they put out for this film. The second issue I had was the pacing of the film it felt very slow which I don’t mind most of the time as I see a ton of films with slow pace and it works to its benefit most of the time. in some rare cases  their are films that have slow paces and don’t pull it off that well this film sadly was one of those films that couldn’t pull the slow pacing ogg. As Since it is a slow paced film you can not help but feel the runtime and want things to keep moving along as things felt like they dragged on from time to time.

The great things I did enjoy the film was the incredibly complex narrative that even though could feel to complex at times was damn well original in its delivery and Gilroy delivered a interesting and intriguing layered story that will have you watching to the end. As well the film pulls together a fantastic cast of actors all of whom no matter how big or small their role is all contribute great performances to the film. The film is more then just a thriller it is a film to make you think and have a discussion about after viewing it. I believe that was Dan’s intention as after giving the film a lot of thought it is a very complex narrative you should think about after viewing it and not jump straight to a conclusion if it was bad or not this one really requires you to think about it long after its over. As without spoiling anything it delves into narratives of Criticism and the ability to benefit from someone else work for their own gain and it is very interesting after you think about it and let it settle.

The film is not a horror piece but more of a psychological thriller with moments of bloody violence and it delivers a thought provoking story that I believe requires multiple viewings and is not an amazing film but a enjoyable one that people should check out if you want to see something original and different.

This film revolves around Art critics that come across these rare paintings they want to benefit from but when they learn the paintings are things that should not be messed around with all of them get things that they never suspected.

Rated R : Nudity, violence, drug use and language

Jake Gyllenhaal Jake gives one of his most interesting and complex performances yet! Jake plays an art critic who is at the core very snobby and stuck up and he plays the character with such delicate ease. He isn’t a over the top and loud person but quiet kept to himself and harsh in the most calming voice. He creates this persona of a critic and really makes it effective through his performance. He has a great layer of emotion with his performance but never makes it feel like their is a lack of emotion or to much he has the perfect amount showing great depth without revealing to much of this character he is playing. He dose not make you love his character as his character is really a terrible person with no redeeming qualities and Jake dose a great job at luring you in to make you go on this journey with him and invest in his character even though he is morally corrupt. Jake has not done s performance like this before and he blows me away once again with such a incredibly complex character and very well shown emotional range in the film he steals the show with his crackling delivery and fantastic charisma.

Dan Gilroy : Dan Gilroy gives strong direction that could of been improved! Dan blew me away with his sensational work on Nightcrawler a few years ago and here he delivers another well done film but I couldn’t help but feel a bit underwhelmed. With Nightcrawler it was simple and straightforward and the budget was quiet low which made him more strict with himself and work within the boundaries he had. Here he had a bit of a bigger budget I am not saying the effects overrides the story its just felt that if they gave him the same budget he had on Nightcrawler and not make it all about the effects and focused more on the story at hand I think it would of been more effective in its telling. I still throughly enjoyed the story its just that is my small nit pick I had about it as it was a thing that bugged me. I did love the strong undertones he wove into the story and the complex narrative at the centre of it. I admire him for giving me a story and narrative that is fresh and new which I loved. He also got fantastic work from his entire cast and really crafted a thought provoking piece of film that worked well but again could of had some minor adjustments. Dan Gilroy intrigues you with the story gets you to invest in the characters and makes you think about it long after it is over this is probably his most thought provoking film yet Dan dose a solid job with this film and I can not wait to see what he dose next.
