Movie Review : Glass

Glass
This is a ok film it’s not great but it’s not bad either. Glass suffers from lack of plot depth with its characters as well as it’s pacing. This film is 2h and 9 minutes it easily could of been an hour and forty five minutes as their are some scenes that are just for filler and some plot details that should of been touched upon. The film had a very interesting premise but it’s the execution of it that was messy. It had all the right elements to make a really entertaining film but due to its overly complex plot it falls short of greatness.

Firstly, one of the main positives of this film was James McAvoy’s performance it really was the driving force that got me to really invest into the film. He commits to his performance showing so many layers of his character that went unexplored in Split and truly captures so much more of his character with great range and emotion. Bruce Willis also gives a good performance too as he dose so many films as he looks like he isn’t trying here he commits to his character and gives a solid performance that is one of his most recent standout performances in recent time. Samuel L. Jackson also gives a fantastic performance as Mr Glass all the performances were solid and all well worth mentioning.

Secondly, The plot was compelling it’s just that it was trying to top so much complex plot lines that it become so confusing to keep up to what the clear point of the plot was going in. I understood the ending and how it all finishes up but it’s the not needed side plots that could of been trimmed off to make the plot more clear to understand at least for me. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy the film it’s just their are some glaring flaws that made me give it a ok rating when it had the potential to be great due to its pacing and messy plot lines at times.

Overall This film is a conclusion to a three part trilogy that I never saw coming dose it live up to the last two? No but is it enjoyable? Yes for the most part but it falls short at some major areas but an overall ok film that i would recommend if you enjoyed unbreakable and Split.

This film is the conclusion to The shared universe of Split and unbreakable. When David Dunn, Kevin and Mr Glass are all put into a hospital to be cured of their thinking that their superhero’s its more dangerous to have them locked up together then if they were apart in ways no one expects.

Rated PG - 13 : for violence including some bloody images, thematic elements, and language

James McAvoy : James plays Kevin In his second outing as the character in amazing grace. Once again James plays the man with the 24 personalities and in this one explores his mental state so much more and also taps into more of the personas that his character has showing so many layers of depth with his characters gripped by his fantastic emotion. In the film he really shows how trapped he is in the state of his no pun intended split personalities and you can really see the pain and suffering that his character feels through his performance as James is able to convey such strong emotional driven moments throughout the film that truly make you feel for him. In the film he goes through such a character arc unlike anyone else’s in the film where yes he is looked upon as a bad guy but after you really understand what he’s been through and the sad story that’s attached to him and the trauma you really feel for his character and it would not of been as effective if not for the sheer commitment given by James’s performance onscreen. He is able to snap into a different personality within seconds and immerse himself totally into that personality and as an actor it’s tricky enough to do one but doing 24 that takes incredible work and James dose just that and it’s quiet the sight to behold. He also is able to channel not just the psychical mannerisms of these different characters but also the vocal aspect and you truly see him turn into multiple people he also delivers great emotional heartbreaking parts of the film so well with such vulnerability in his voice in the more intimate moments and it’s amazing as you genuinely believe him throughout his entire performance. James doubles down on the personalities in this film in complex ways that he didn’t the first time around and to my opinion gives the best outing of Kevin in Glass truly capturing a magnificent performance that is one of his best of his career it’s truly a remarkable performance.

M. Night. Shayamalan : M. Night gives very Split directing choices in this film. Here he gives a very slow but interesting build to the meeting of these three characters for the beginning of the film. And I really enjoyed that aspect but the last half is more about the chaos that goes on and unfortunately I think he was so wrapped up in delivering a justifiable follow up to Split that the plot line of Unbreakable to me didn’t feel satisfying as I did not see as much for those characters as Splits characters did. The film I also felt could of either had a script rewrite with its pacing and plots or just of had a part two to the film as I felt he tried to fit so much material into a single film that it felt overwhelming at times so it could of benefited if it was put into two separate films for more breathing room in terms of script structure. And then their was the style of the film I don’t think he really had a set mindset of where to put this film tone wise it was to me all over the place and never really having a firm grasp of where to put it style wise. It was telling a story of these three characters great but it felt more like three separate story’s with totally different styles and structures that when put together felt satisfying to watch interact but fell apart story wise. So M. Night didn’t do a terrible job I felt like he had a tough choice on where he wanted this film to go making the final result being very Split as half is really enjoyable and the other half could of been fixed upon so I will say M. Night you did a good job but could of used some fixing with its script structure.
