Movie Review : Moonlight
Moonlight
This movie is an emotional triumph! The extraordinary direction by Barry Jenkins was incredible. Along with the fantastic performances from the cast especially from Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris. This film is a beautifully crafted film that hits you like a punch in the heart.
A story of a boy who grows up in a tough neighbourhood from a young age to an adult dealing with his sexuality and his self discovery.
Rated R : for some sexuality, drug use, brief violence, and language throughout
Mahershala Ali : Ali delivers an outstanding supporting performance! Ali has been in house of cards, the recent show Luke Cage and the box office success hunger games franchise. But I haven't seen Ali as an artist do a performance that has shown his range dramatically and he dose so greatly with this film. He plays a drug dealer who has a heart of gold and takes care for this kid and you can see he truly cares for him the way he interacts with him and the way Ali shows it onscreen is great. Their is not one moment where I'm not invested in his character or not buying his performance he's one hundred percent their. It's great to see him in a drama he's extraordinary in it he isn't in it much but dam he makes most of the scenes he has and shines in them. He also was able to express layers of emotion I haven't seen him explore really. Like their is a scene where he is talking with the kids mom and the sheer stress and anger in his voice was all their you believe he truly cared and hated that his mother didn't so he confronts her and he's so genuine onscreen it's a fantastic scene and fantastic range to see him do in the film. Overall Ali delivers an outstanding performance in this film.
Naomie Harris : Harris is Superb! Naomie filmed this role in 2 days while on a press tour for Spectre that's impressive! Harris is truly dazzling in this film she dominated the screen with her incredible supporting performance in the film. She plays the kiss mother and every scene she's in she just gives it her all. She just got in the skin of this character and truly became her character it felt so genuine and real. Her emotional range was fantastic she was not the best mother to the child and would yell at him but still loves him and the way she express that onscreen www incredibly well done. Their are many scenes she shines but one stood out to me when she was asking for money the sheer panic in her tone and look in eye she captured my attention and couldn't get me to look away. Harris delivers a scene stealing supporting performance in this film.
Berry Jenkins : Berry Jenkins is a visionary! I have not heard of this director before watching this film after seeing this I'll watch all his other work. Berry Jenkins not only gave great direction but was able to take such a heavy subject and execute it beautifully getting the audience to relate to it. It's a powerful emotional film he has created that is unlike anything I've seen in the past while. He also got outstanding performances from the cast and had great lighting , camera work and score it all fell into place greatly. Overall Jenkins has crafted together a beautiful piece of cinematic art that should not be missed amazing direction from Berry Jenkins.
The Lighting : the tones used were very immersive! Their are scenes when the kid is with the drug dealer it would be all bright and white coloured. But when the kid was with his mom it would be more cherry red and by himself be very grey and dark and I liked the able to express the feeling of the film through the tone I loved that great job guys.
The Cinematography : the camerawork in this film was brilliant! Their are many scenes I loved in this film. The one tho that stood out was when he would soak his face in water and clean his face the way the scene was captured. Was beautifully well done and powerful the shots in this film are well done cinematic shots that express the tone and feel of the film perfectly incredibly well done loved it great job guys.
The Score : Amazing absolutely amazing! It felt so loud and fast and intense and that's what the film is at times it matches the scenes and expresses it beautifully through the well composed score. The use of instruments and sounds they had for this score was incredible it was a great melody that fit the frame overall loved the score.
